Social spaces are not a soccer table

A social space doesn't become social just because there's a game, a couch or a coffee machine.

It becomes social when location, function, atmosphere and the company's everyday life make it natural for people to meet.

That's why a strong social space doesn't start with the furniture. It starts with an understanding of who should meet, when it should happen, and what should make it easy to stay.

Five principles for a social space that gets used
Five principles for a social space that gets used

Why some social zones are empty

A social zone can be visually appealing and still not be used.

This happens, among other things, when it:

- lies outside of people's natural routes

- feels too exposed or too private

- only offers one way to sit or stay

- has no real function in everyday life

- creates noise close to areas that require focus

- looks like a generic concept with no connection to the company's identity.

Five principles for a social space that gets used

1. Place it in a natural flowPeople meet more easily when the room is located where they already move - without becoming a passage that disrupts the stay.

2. Provide multiple opportunities for participation. Some will sit for a long time. Others will stand for five minutes. Some meet in pairs, others in a larger group.

3. Tie the space to a real occasion: coffee, lunch, knowledge sharing, a project table, a shared activity or access to outdoor areas can give the space a natural role.

4. Create a balance between energy and calm.

A social space can be lively, but it should not make the rest of the workplace less efficient. Acoustics, distance and zoning are key.

5. Make the brand visible. Branding doesn't have to be a big logo. It can be in materials, local references, features, hosting, and the way people are invited in.

Social spaces can support relationships, belonging and informal knowledge sharing.

But they must be designed for the specific culture - not copied from a trend report.
